Le présent article s’inscrit dans un ensemble de réflexion sur la pratique de la médecine dans l’antiquité, plus particulièrement l’antiquité grecque. Il fait suite à une étude menée sur la médecine diététique telle que la concevait Hérodicos de Selynbrie selon les témoignages recueillis dans les écrits de Platon. Il se propose de relever les critiques formulées par le philosophe à l’encontre de cette thérapeu- tique. Il s’agit donc de montrer, selon Platon les limites de la proposition médicale faite par un maitre de gymnase atteint d’une maladie incurable. Comment le philosophe Platon, fondateur d’une école de philosophie percevait-il la médecine diététique telle que la concevait Hérodicos de Sélymbrie ? La République, ouvrage de maturité du philosophe et le Phedre, analysent la thérapeutique de Hérodicos en y portant un regard dépréciateur. Elles constituent donc notre principale source d’information. Selon Platon cette thérapeutique est avilissante pour le citoyen et un obstacle au fonctionnement adéquat de la cité.

This article is part of a series of reflections on the practice of medicine in antiquity, and more specifically in Greek antiquity. It follows on from a study of dietetic medicine as conceived by Herodicus of Selynbria, based on evidence found in Plato’s writings. The aim is to identify the criticisms levelled by the philosopher against this form of therapy. According to Plato, the aim is to show the limits of the medical proposal made by a gymnasium master suffering from an incurable disease. How did the philosopher Plato, founder of a school of philosophy, perceive dietary medicine as conceived by Herodicus of Selymbria? The Republic, the philosopher’s mature work, and the Phedre, analyse Herodicus’ therapeutics in a disparaging light. They are therefore our main source of information.
