Les côtes de l’actuelle Côte d’Ivoire ont été visitées par des navires français aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, mais la France a dû renoncer à s’y implanter de façon per- manente. Elle a refait surface en 1842 et 1843 pour tenter une implantation défi- nitive à travers la signature de traités avec certains rois et chefs locaux. Cependant, cette présence française a été contrariée par la guerre franco-prussienne en 1870. La France a quitté le territoire sauf Arthur Verdier, un simple négociant qui tiendra tête aux velléités anglaises pour le contrôle du territoire ivoirien. Malgré le rôle joué pour permettre à la France de revernir et coloniser la Côte d’Ivoire, Arthur Verdier est presque inconnu des acteurs clés ayant permis l’occupation du territoire. Étude empirique reposant sur la collecte d’informations sur internet, dans des ouvrages, des articles, des mémoires et des thèses, elle vise à mieux faire connaître Arthur verdier et son rôle dans le processus de colonisation de la Côte d’Ivoire.

The coasts of present-day Côte d’Ivoire were visited by French ships in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but France had to give up trying to establish itself there permanently. It resurfaced in 1842 and 1843 to attempt a permanent settlement through the signing of treaties with certain local kings and chiefs. However, this French presence was thwarted by the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. France left the territory except for Arthur Verdier, a simple trader who stood up to the English attempts to control the Ivorian territory. Despite the role he played in enabling France to regenerate and colonize the Ivory Coast, Arthur Verdier is almost unknown to the key actors who enabled the occupation of the territory. An empirical study based on the collection of information from the internet, books, articles, dissertations and theses, it aims to make Arthur Verdier and his role in the colonization process of the Ivory Coast better known.
